Favourite cafes can be hard to choose in Auckland. We are spoilt for choice! A number of factors come into deciding our favourite cafes. We want a cafe that makes delicious food AND brews a good cup of coffee. The atmosphere needs to feel welcoming and vibrant, we don’t want the music blasting so loud that feels like being in a nightclub.
10 of our favourite cafes that you MUST try ( in no particular order).
1. Orphans Kitchen – Ponsonby road
Orphans Kitchen is the perfect combination of a sophisticated yet casual dining experience. They offer simple but complex foods that’s rich with flavour. Try the smashed avocado paired with goat’s chev on rye, or if you’re in the mood for something sweet, their home-made crumpets served with honey comb are delicious.
2. Little King – Milford
If you’re craving waffles, Little King is the place to come! They have a large range of both sweet and savoury waffles on their menu. Make sure to try one of their delicious smoothies, they are to-die-for.
3. Black and Gold – Albany
This hidden gem is located on Auckland’s North Shore situated in Albany’s industrial park. Although it’s in an unusual spot, it’s full of character. The rustic interior and herb-filled planters will make you think that this stylish cafe belongs in Grey Lynn or Ponsonby. They use free range ingredients and the menu is fresh and innovative.
4. Takapuna Beach Cafe
If you’re over on the shore, I suggest that you do the Milford to Takapuna beach walk and stop off at Takapuna Beach Cafe. Along with beautiful views of Rangitoto island, they offer an inventive menu with a take on typical brunch foods. Make sure to grab an ice-cream for your walk back too!
5. Fed Delicatessen – Federal St
Al Brown’s Federal Delicatessen provides a classic take on an NYC Jewish deli. Inspired by the foods in Montreal and America, the menu includes cured meats, lox, pickles, American cheesecakes and bottomless cups of Joe. It will make you feel like you’re in a stylish American diner.
6. Catroux – Westmere
The first thing you see when walking into Catroux is their fresh white interior. It makes the cosy space seem bigger and welcoming. The huge glass cabinet is filled with, fresh salads, sandwiches with delicious sweet treats. They offer nutritious food to make you feel energized, if you’re needing that perfect pick-me-up.
7. Rosie – Parnell
Located just outside the Rose Gardens on Gladstone Road, Rosie is a sophisticated and modern cafe. The atmosphere is vibrant and the food is stylish and delicious. There is an incredible cabinet that displays the most enticing selection of mini tarts, chocolates and puddings.
8. Shaky Isles – Britomart
Shaky Isles is set inside a large historic building that is full of character and quirky comic cartoons. Their menu offers scrumptious yet healthy food and they have an excellent reputation for making a superb cup of coffee!
9. Dear Jervois – Herne Bay
Dear Jervois is always brimming with customers and once you go, you can understand why. This homely cafe offers a delicious brunch and lunch menu with a number of healthy alternatives and provides gluten free, wheat-free and vegan options.
10. The Botanist – City Works Depot
Walking into The Botanist, you are greeted by a fresh range of gorgeous flowers, awakening your senses. It is the perfect place to come to on a sunny day to catch up with friends while enjoying some great food and coffee. They do amazing juices too!
